The first step in hiding your IP address on a Mac is to remember to delete all of your cookies. Cookies are links from your computer to marketing services and potentially even spyware. Deleting the cookies is necessary because they will link your computer to your IP Address even with a proxy, and that would defeat the purpose of using a service to hide your IP Address. 1A: Scroll down and read the information in STEP 5 as that will tell you what information you need to have on hand from your VPN or Proxy Service.
Step Two – Finding A Service:
The biggest challenge for finding a service is making sure that the services that you are interested in using will be compatible with your Mac’s Operating System and with your Browser. Usually that information can be found in the FAQ section or sometimes it is listed on a Compatibility Tab on the manufacturers website.
The goal here is to find a quality VPN service that will work with your computer. A VPN or Virtual Private Network is a service that masks your IP Address by providing the Internet (websites, etc.) with a false IP Address. This process is the crux of hiding an IP address on either a Mac or a PC.
Most VPN and Proxy services are compatible with Firefox and Safari as well as a few other browsers.
Computer Configuration Firefox:
Step 1: On the main tool bar click Firefox, and choose preferences.
Step 2: The resulting screen will have a number of icons across the top. They list as: Main, Tabs, Content, Feeds, Privacy, Security and Advanced. Click Advanced.
Step 3: The Advanced Screen shot will show four tabs across the top. They will list as: General, Network, Update, and Encryption: Choose Network.
Step 4: The Network Screen will offer two buttons: Click Settings.
Step 5: The resulting settings screen will be called: Configure Proxies To Access The Internet.
From the TOP you are offered three bubbles: No Proxy, Auto-Detect Proxy Setting For this Network, and Manual Proxy Configuration: Choose Manual Proxy Configuration
In the white box titled NO PROXY FOR: Type in localhost, 127.0.0.1 What this does is it prevents your computers internal process from looping back to your IP Address. Leave this Screen OPEN and proceed to Step 5.
NOTE Step 5: The information for this part of the process comes from the VPN or Proxy service. Regardless of whether or not you are using a free service or a paid service you will need to obtain the IP address and Port number from the service. This is usually found on their site but you may need to contact them for that information. Once you have that information, it is entered into the Configure Proxies To Access The Internet window that was used in Step 4.
Step 6: In the Box titled: HTTP Proxy: enter the IP Address that you obtained from the VPN or Proxy service. In the box Title Port: Enter the Port number that was obtained from the Service.
Step 7: Step Six: The above five steps configure your computer to accept a specific proxy. Step 6 is just to confirm that the process has been applied and is working. While logged into the service you can visit any of the what is my IP Address sites such as http://whatismyipaddress.com

Step 3: The resulting window will be titled: NETWORK. In the Configure Proxies box: Change the selection to MANUALLY.
