Tools To Bypass Internet Censorship & Firewalls

It is interesting to me to watch the happenings on the Internet because I can remember a time when there was no Internet. The methods by which technology is constantly changing, and the social developments of nations, governments and Internet users changes along with technology. For many decades, the world has watched how governments restrict the actions of their citizens. Watching from an Internet perspective is not only interesting it is very informative. Censorship exists everywhere, even here in the United States. The extent of censorship is amazing. It is a two sided coin. Governments want to keep information from their citizens, and they want to keep information from the world. For all things, there is a balance, and while censorship exists so does the desire to know what the big secret is. To those means, technical methods have been developed to allow people to find out the secrets behind firewalls and beneath the face of censorship.

Choices For Bypassing Firewalls, and Censorship:

Proxies whether private or public have become one of the most popular tools for Internet users to utilize when trying to bypass blocked sites, firewalls, etc. They are common, in that there are many choices out there for Internet users to choose from, but they are not all safe to use. There have been instances where data miners have set up proxies for the singular purpose of collecting data from the proxy users. It is, therefore, advisable to use only those proxies that are secure, known, and honest. This can be determined by looking at consumer ratings, awards, and certificates that the proxy may have been awarded. The proxy works by masking the Internet data emitted by your computer and swapping that data for a false set of data. Proxies have become popular for many Internet uses, but perhaps the most widely use of proxy is simply to keep your information safe and unseen.

VPNs or virtual private networks have become very popular in the last several years. The security that they offer to subscribers is awesome. They do a lot to help Internet users bypass censorship and firewalls within other countries. VPN’s work well for both the business sector, and the private sector. Like proxies, VPN’s come in both public and private. They can be free or may require a monthly subscription. Expect more services with a paid subscription.

VPN’s work by deploying servers around the globe. These servers allow users to log into and obtain an IP Address from the host country where the server is located. Because the VPN, like the Proxy, masks the data from your computer and provides a false set of information, which masks your computers identity. It is much like a chameleon in that the new information provided by the VPN allows foreign computers to mingle with native computers from the host country. Many governments block access to sites if the computer is not from the home country. If the network, that you are trying to access, thinks you are from the home country than it will allow you to view sites that would normally be restricted. Thus, you have bypassed the censorship, and many of the firewalls set up to block outside access. A great VPN to consider is hidemyass.com. Not only is it trustworthy, it will provide a great standard of excellence from which to compare other VPN’s against.

Tunnelling:

Tunnelling works well between two networked devices. This is an Internet Protocol method of exchanging information. It works best when there is an exchange of information such as streaming video or music files. It may not be the best method to explore blocked sites from youtube, but it works well enough as a bypass mechanism.

The simplest way to bypass government censorship or to access sites behind firewalls is to use a VPN. I say this not because I want to push their services but because VPN’s are usually simple to use, regardless of your computer experience level. They have downloadable platforms that do most of the work for you. You simply choose the country you want to visit and go enjoy the Internet. They are literally that simple to use. I would still recommend using a VPN that is well known with good user feedback and a guarantee, especially if you are opting for a paid service.
